Private universities are striving to continuously advance the quality standards in the Austrian higher education sector. The obligation to gain accreditation or to pursue re-accreditation in regular intervals is an important characteristic of private universities, distinguishing them from public universities. Private universities or, more specifically, the Austrian Private Universities Conference (ÖPUK) founded in 2009, are represented in almost all working groups regarding the development of the Austrian higher education sector. Moreover, the ÖPUK is a founding member of the European Union of Private Higher Education (EUPHE). The founding countries of this association based in Brussels and established in 2018 are Germany, France, Spain, Portugal and Austria. In the aforementioned countries, the EUPHE represents the interests of 250 private higher education institutions, 420 000 students and 2.7 million graduates.  For further information visit
