The Brigitte Hamann Science Award recognizes outstanding scientific achievements and exceptional research careers. Application deadline is 20. January 2026.

  • Graduate of an Austrian private university that is a member of the ÖPUK (https://oepuk.ac.at)
  • Graduation no more than ten years ago
  • The candidate has an outstanding scientific career or has conducted outstanding research in their field.

Evaluation criteria

  1. Cover letter with complete details of the employer or institution and the field of work and research
  2. Tabular curriculum vitae consisting of:

    o Full name with all titles
    o Date of birth
    o Scientific training
    o Academic degrees
    o Professional activities
    o Scientific expertise
    o Awards and scholarships received
    o Third-party funding acquired
    o Patents
    o List of publications (only peer-reviewed publications, with impact factor specified where possible)

  3. Title and brief description of the scientific achievement to be recognized
  4. Publication selected for submission (full text)
  5. Summary of application data

    o    For the Science category, scientific publications that have been published in relevant journals can be submitted immediately. Dissertations and theses alone will not be accepted. In its assessment, the jury will pay particular attention to the scientific level, the lasting benefit of the work, and the quality of the publication. In addition, the degree of innovation, market and application relevance, and a clear and convincing presentation will be taken into account.

    o    The work must have been published, must not have already been awarded a scientific prize, and must not be submitted for another prize at the same time.

    o    Scientific publications must not be more than two years old. Both may be written in German or English. Published individual and joint works will be evaluated. In the case of joint works, it is important to ensure that the individual contribution is identified and that the main contributor submits the work.

Special criteria for the award include:

  • contribution to a deeper understanding of the research topic
  • reference to the international and/or European dimension of the respective issue
  • impetus for broader public discussion of these topics

  • Student or graduate of an Austrian private university that is a member of the ÖPUK (https://oepuk.ac.at)
  • Graduation (if applicable) no more than ten years ago; if still studying, the start of studies no more than six years ago
  • The candidate has played a leading role in founding one or more startups that are still active during the application period and pursue innovative approaches.

Evaluation criteria

Application documents

  • Company presentation (approx. 10 slides)
  • Summary of the business plan (approx. 5 pages)

The three finalists will be asked to submit a short application video at a later stage.

  • Presentation of the startup: What services does the startup offer? What is its USP? (max. 3,000 characters)
  • Practical relevance to retail and the consumer goods industry: What scientific findings is the start-up idea based on? How are these translated into practice? (max. 1,250 characters)
  • Innovative strength of the start-up idea: What is the innovative nature of the start-up?
  • What new solutions does the startup offer? (max. 1,250 characters)
  • Potential benefits for retail and the consumer goods industry: How do retail and the consumer goods industry benefit from the solutions offered? (max. 1,250 characters)
  • Please provide 3-5 keywords that characterize the startup thematically.

Special criteria for the award include:

  • Artistic excellence – proven exceptional quality in artistic work over a longer period of time.
  • Innovative strength – influential contributions to the further development of artistic forms of expression, genres, or aesthetics.
  • International appeal – lasting impact and recognition beyond national borders.
  • Repertoire influence/style formation – significant influence on interpretation, repertoire development, or styles.
  • Social relevance – artistic work with social, cultural, or educational significance.
  • Educational achievement – commitment to passing on art, for example through teaching, mentoring, or promoting young talent.
  • Critical recognition – documented appreciation by professional critics, institutions, and the professional public.
